Purim Celebration

March 10 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Join us for our Purim Celebration with coffee and Hamantaschen (triangular shaped cookies) Oneg in the Sanctuary.

We would be reading the whole Megilah Esther / the scroll (book) of Esther, and typically different people would be chosen to read from it. It is customary to make special noises at certain points in the reading as follows: When we hear the names Haman, Esther, Mordechai, and we also use groggers  (noise makers).
The following is observed:

  • Zachor –“Remember” Shabbat Torah reading of in which we are to remember the deeds of Amalek (Haman’s ancestor) who sought the destruction of the Jewish people (Deuteronomy 25:17-19). Will be observed on Shabbat prior to Purim.
  • Ta’anit Esther – Fast of Esther: to be observed on Monday March 9th, 2020 from  5:48 am to 6:59 pm . If  you are in good health, fast is done without food or water, but if your health does not permit it or if a woman is pregnant then abstain from fasting.  Also abstain from that which provides temporarily pleasure like watching TV, or listening music; video games and the like also apply to kids 11 and under.
  • Matanot  La’Evyonim  Give to the needy. In Purim is a special mitzvah to give to the poor.
  • Mishloach Manot – Send Food Portions to Friends.  Emphasis on unity and friendship; usually men send to men, and women to women at least two kinds of ready-to-eat foods (pastry, fruit, beverage).
  • Be Merry – Eat, drink, and rejoice with friends and family on March 10th, 2020
